The biggest drawback? It is over. Starlee Kine gave us a handful of six extraordinarily interesting shows where she investigates something. No matter how inane the topic sounds, she really brings the best out of it.
Interesting concept, but couldn't get past the feeling that it strove too hard to be "quirky". Felt very similar to Every Little Thing, also from Gimlet (so if you like that one, you will probably like this). Also just didn't love the host.
The show is not making any new episodes, but I would highly suggest listening to the ones there. Sure to go down in the annals of podcasting history as one of the biggest "What If?" shows ever.
If you're looking for a new podcast to listen to. This is really specialYou'll laugh, you'll cry, it's a really lovely show that sadly didn't get a second season
This is a fantastic podcast!! I have found it years after it was made but the content is timeless and a compelling listen. So grateful to have found it and for all the energy put into making it!
Mystery Show is perhaps the most apparent example of not seeing what everyone else sees in a podcast that I have experienced. While its very brief run is adored by many, I was left underwhelmed by almost every episode.Whether it was the video store that disappeared overnight (but wasn't actually as mysterious as they wanted it to be) or the mundane debate over an actor's height, the show clearly wants to be more than it actually is. Series like Underunderstood have since done a much better job at the 'finding answers to baffling questions' premise. It's telling that Gimlet cancelled it - apparently due to sluggish production and a lack of ideas - when they have usually been so loyal and committed to their series.
A genius show about those small mysteries of life that you'd never though anyone would go through the effort to make sense of. Until Starlee Kine does. And the greatest discovery lies in her journey to uncover the answer, the people she encounters and the stories she unravels along the way. If only it were more episodes.
